The Farmers Insurance open is underway tomorrow where last year’s winner, Tiger Woods, will take on an incredible line-up in order to hold on to this title. The Farmers Insurance is played just off the coast of Southern California at Torrey Pines, where the tournament will be played on both courses, the South and the North. All players will have to play both the North and South courses over the first two days and then when the field is cut for the weekend, the rest of the tournament will be played solely on the South course. The South is said to be the more difficult out of the two reaching up to 7,569 yards in contrast to the North which is considerably shorter at 6,874 yards, (Both courses are par 72). Even with oversea’s players taking a real shine to PGA tour events, they have only won once out 46 running’s at Torrey Pines, with the American’s clearly dominating.
The star-studded field includes the likes of World number 1 Tiger Woods, two-time winner of the Farmers Insurance in 2000 and 2001 Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson and local boy Rickie Fowler. The Winner of the tournament will take home 500 FedEx cup points and a staggering $1,098,000 in prize money. Of course Tiger Woods is odds on favourite after winning last year to sneak just seven behind Sam Snead’s record of 82 PGA tour wins and of course his seventh Farmers Insurance win. Phil Mickelson is another favourite even though he hasn’t won the event since 2001. However, after coming second in last week’s Abu Dhabi Championship, Big Phil is feeling confident that his good start to 2014 will progress further. The locals will of course be backing the young American Rickie Fowler, who will be playing in his hometown and has a good record here where he has finished 5th, 20th, 13th and 6th.
