The 5th major

THE PLAYERS Championship - Final Round

The Players Championship which is also known as the 5th major is a competition that has a field full of talent. The tournament is played over four days at the Ponte Vedra Sawgrass course in Florida. Roberto Castro took the tournament by storm by shooting a sensational 9 under par for the first round. The american who turned pro just 6 years ago was sitting comfortably at the top of the table after shooting 5 under for the first 9 holes and then scoring an incredible eagle on the 11th which saw him pass his competitors to 7 under par, he then finished on 9 under, but did not continue the second round as he finished the first and finds himself on 3 under par after shooting a 78, 6 over par.

The top of the leaderboard is now dominated by big name players such as Sergio Garcia, Tiger Woods, Lee Westwood and the recent holder of the green jacket Adam Scott. Sergio Garcia leads after shooting two astonishing rounds 5 years after his last victory at Sawgrass in 2008 and is now in pole position to pocket £1.1 million from the event. Garcia started on the 10th with 6 consecutive pars and finished the first nine with birdies on the 16th and 18th. However he bogeyed the first and managed to fight his way to the top of the leader with 5 birdies in succession starting from the 2nd.

The final two rounds are looking to display some intense golf. But the one person I am personally looking forward to see play, is none other than Lee Westwood. Lee is the dark horse going into the final few rounds sitting tied for 3rd on 9 under. A first round 69 and a second round 66 sees him just behind the leaders and looking to win the £1.1 million prize fund. As long as he keeps away from the legendary 17th hole, Lee could be on the cards to do some damage this weekend.
