Down and Out

McIlroy-exits-the-Accenture-Match-Play-Championship-after-facing-defeat-from-Shane-Lowry-213684

Dreams shattered throughout the Dove Mountain course as big stars came crashing out of the tournament left, right and center.

Rory Mcilroy was left with his head in his hands after Shane Lowry put in a fine performance to see him past the world number 1.  As play resumed as normal after the freak snow storm that saw play be haulted for up to four hours, Mcilroy got off to a good start after going 2up within an instant. But his good start wasn’t to last as Shane Lowry had a moment of inspiration which helped him fight back and finally win 1up. Mcilroy was unlucky throughout but especially on the last hole as he witnessed his ball go into the bunker on the right hand side of the green. With a good lie, Mcilroy was hoping to show us why he is world number 1 but it wasn’t to be as his bunker shot fell just half inch short of the hole and Lowry made a great up and down from the same bunker to save the half and win the match.

Another shock result saw former world number 1 Tiger Woods fall at the very first hurdle that was raised at a high standard by Charles Howell III. Woods was defeated 2&1 as Howell held on well to his lead throughout even when Woods brought it back to all square. Howell is the 63rd seed overall in the event so this result will come as a surprise to not only us and Tiger, but Howell himself. Woods responded to his loss with this statement, “It’s the nature of the format,” Woods went onto say. “You’ve just got to beat the guy you’re playing against, and I didn’t do that today. Chucky won the match.”

There were a continuous wave of shock results which saw Lee Westwood crash and burn  at the hands of Rafael Cabrera Bello who is ranked 60th in the world. Westwood was 2up through five but could never keep that form for the rest of the match as Cabrera Bello won on the 19th hole. Cabrera Bello holed a terrific ten foot put on the first extra hole for birdie which was enough to see him past Westwood and the first round.

Will there be any more shocks today similar to the ones of yesterday? Here are some of the matches that are being played today:
