WGC – Accenture Match Play Championship

Considering this is my first post, i decided there couldn’t be a better way to start life as a blogger than to write about the WGC match play championship. The tournament is played on the par 72 course of Ritz-Carlton Golf club at Dove Mountain in Arizona. The Jack Nicklaus designed golf course is occupied by wide fairways surrounded by the Sonoran desert.

Rory Mcilroy is off to a flying start after shooting a 64 in qualifying. The world no.1 is not phased by his 2&1 defeat to Hunter Mahan last year as he prepares to go against Shane Lowry in his first match of the WGC Match Play Championship.

Even with Mcilroy dominating modern golf, you can never rule out Tiger Woods, especially after his impressive start to 2013 after winning the Farmers Insurance Open on the 24th of January.  Tiger tees off at 2.25pm against Charles Howell III who has a world ranking of 63.

Others to look out for are Luke Donald who holds his position in 3rd in the world rankings, and Justin Rose in 5th. If you thought i was forgetting big Phil Mickelson you are mistaken as i have not forgotten about him but more the fact he seems to have forgotten about the tournament as he has withdrawn due to a family vacation.

One player i personally feel people should keep an eye on is Thorjborn Olesen. The young Danish star has achieved two top three finishes in his last three events putting him 7th in the race to Dubai and increasing his prize money of the new season to £279,834. Sitting comfortably at a world ranking of 40, he may not be a contender for the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship but he is certainly one for the future. He opens his WGC match play career against the welshman Jamie Donaldson who is always experiencing a sense of success after winning the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.

Other Matches to look out for:

Sergio Garcia (12) vs. Thongchai Jaidee (53)

Ian Poulter (11) vs. Stephen Gallacher (54)

Charl Schwartzel (9) vs. Russel Henley (56)

Hunter Mahan (23) vs. Matteo Manassero (42)

Justin Rose (5) vs. K.J. Choi (60)

Bubba Watson (8) vs. Chris Wood (37)

Lee Westwood (7) vs. Rafael Cabrera Bello (58)

Luke Donald (3) vs. Marcel Siem (62)
